Your friends will be begging you to make
a rag quilt for them. They may even go out and buy the fabric and
give it to you so you will have everything you need to make a rag
quilt for them.
From: Penny Halgren
Dear Friend,
Making a rag quilt was
the furthest thing from her mind when Ellen entered
her local quilt shop. She was in search of a fun, light-hearted
quilt that she could make for her son who was leaving for college.
She immediately went over to the quilt patterns
and books to begin her search. As she explored the possibilities,
a picture of a rag quilt jumped out at her.
It was perfect! The quilt was made from 8” squares and all of
the seams were on the outside, so you couldn’t really tell whether
they matched or not.
Ellen is a beginning quilter, and she decided
that this quilt looked so easy to make that she
could probably make it by herself. She bought the fabric and a
book with the rag quilt pattern in it, and headed home.
Later that evening, she called me, almost
in tears. The rag quilt instructions in the book were so confusing,
she couldn’t figure out where to begin.
We decided that sewing a rag quilt together
would be our weekend project, and we would work on it until it
was complete. Her son was leaving in two weeks, and we figured
that with both of us working, the quilt could be made in the weekend.
She was right. The instructions were very
unclear. It was a good thing that we had the rag quilt pictures
to guide us. Other than that, we would have been completely lost.
That weekend, we sewed, ripped and re-sewed.
We wasted fabric since we cut some of the pieces the wrong size.
And it took much longer than it should have. We laughed
and we kept going.
It was my first rag quilt, and I knew that any
quilter could make a rag quilt easily,
if they had a complete set of instructions - step-by-step and
fully illustrated, telling them exactly how to make a rag quilt.
And, so, I wrote the instructions - Rag Quilt
in a Weekend!
From fabric cutting to seam cutting, you
get everything you need in Rag Quilt in a Weekend!
- Did you know that your rag quilt can
be made from flannel, denim, cotton or cotton blends? Rag
Quilt in a Weekend! divulges why polyester might not
be the best choice for a rag quilt, and what type of fabric
might be better. With complete knowledge, you decide
what kind of fabric to use, based on who your quilt is for and
how it will be used. No guessing or playing “follow the leader.”
You choose based on what you want. And your trip to
the quilt shop will be relaxing and completely fun,
because you will know exactly how much fabric to buy.
-
Sew your blocks together with
the speed and efficiency of a professional tailor.
This book is jam-packed with tips and tricks to save you time
sewing your blocks together. Did you know that one of the most
frustrating parts of making a quilt is keeping the blocks in
the right sewing order? Rag Quilt in a Weekend!
lets you in on the secrets of keeping your blocks in the correct
sewing order, and shows you how to speed piece – saving you
precious time and energy.
-
Seams open or sewn to one
side? That really
is the question in making this quilt. For patchwork quilts,
quilters generally agree it is best to fold seam allowances
to one side. Is that true for rag quilts, too? Sometime “yes,”
and sometimes “no.” You’ll find out when to open ‘em up, when
to fold ‘em over, and why in your copy of Rag Quilt
in a Weekend!
-
Binding or no binding?
The simple answer is that this rag quilt requires no binding.
You will discover the easy method for finishing the
edges of this rag quilt to secure the inside layer
and ensure that your quilt doesn’t “fringe away.”
-
Fringing and finishing
– what makes it fringe, and how do you created the fringe without
ruining your quilt? All of the techniques to create the fringe
and finishing touches are right at your fingertips. Your finished
quilt will age with grace as it is loved and used, and will
be just as together 50 years from now as it is today.
From Fabric Cutting to Seam
Cutting! Make sense now?
Once the book was finished, I discovered
that armed with a complete instruction guide, you can
make a rag quilt in just one weekend! Easily!
That doesn’t mean you need to get up at
the crack of dawn, drink 57 cups of coffee to keep you going,
eat as you quilt, ignore the family, dog and cat, allow the dishes
to stack up in the kitchen, stay up until the wee hours of the
morning, rest for an hour or two, then get up and start again,
hoping that by the end of the second day, you still have a few
clean dishes in the cupboard, your family hasn’t left you, the
cat and dog are still your friends, and your rag quilt is complete.
Finished in a weekend doesn’t mean any of
that. Finished in a weekend means that you can easily
complete this quilt – from cutting fabric to cutting
seams (fringing your rag quilt), working only 4-5 hours each day;
maybe even less.
You get speed and efficiency
because you have all of the rag quilt instructions and
guidance you
need to zip right through
making this quilt. Including full color photographs of each step,
so you can see and read exactly what to do next.
A true beginner – even a non-quilter
– can make this rag quilt. All of the sewing is simple,
straight seams, and can be done on the machine. Even if you never
thought about making a quilt, planned to make a quilt, or imagined
that you could make a quilt, you can make this one!
Intermediate and advanced quilters may choose
to simply refer to the pictures and zip right through making the quilt,
checking in for the tips, tricks and shortcuts sprinkled
throughout the book.
Regardless of your skill level, your finished
quilt will look like it was made by an experienced quilter. Your
family and friends will be amazed at your creativity
and skill.
The weekend after Ellen and I finished the
rag quilt for her son, another friend and I went to a concert
in a local park. We were relaxing and enjoying the fresh night
air and lively music. We watched as a very festive group of ladies
started gathering – first two, then two more, then one more.
The next thing we knew, there were 17 ladies
– all wearing purple and donning beautiful and fancy Red
Hats! What a fabulous time they had – dancing, laughing,
eating snow cones (it was a hot summer night here) – enjoying
the good times. Their frolic made our evening even more enjoyable.
And then I learned about the Red Hat Society
– a wonderful, fun-loving group of ladies.
Then it dawned on me – why not design a
Red Hat Rag Quilt? The very next day, I started
on the pattern; and within a week had the pattern, made the quilt,
and wrote the instructions. Whew!
It’s ready for you and available
only at www.Rag-Quilt-Instructions.com.
This
pattern is so new, you are GUARANTEED to be the first
quilter in your group to have it.
Your copy of Rag Quilt in a Weekend!
includes instructions and the pattern for the Red Hat
Rag Quilt, plus full size templates for the hat
brim pieces (the triangles). In addition, your book has
tricks for cutting the fabric efficiently and with little waste
– even though you are cutting triangles. And the book shows you
exactly how to cut and sew the triangles simply and easily.
Rag Quilt in a Weekend!
also includes color diagrams showing the layout for each of the
pieced blocks within the Red Hat Rag Quilt, and
how the pieces fit together to make the centerpiece of this quilt
– the bright Red Hat.
For you Red Hat Ladies, this could be your
runaway weekend. Plan your outing at a retreat in the woods, order
in your meals, and enjoy sewing in the company of your Red Hat
Chapter companions.
Maybe some of your members don’t sew at
all. Have them cut fabric and entertain the sewing group. Remember,
though, this quilt is so easy to make, a beginner can
make it.
Maybe nobody in your Red Hat Chapter sews
– start something new and have a great time!
At the end of the weekend, you can each
have your own quilt. Or have a weekend where you make rag
quilts for a charity. Wouldn’t the kids at Children’s
Hospital just love to snuggle with a festive Red Hat Rag
Quilt? Or maybe the seniors in the retirement home would
enjoy one of these Fast, Fun and Funky Quilts to brighten their
day and know that people care about them.
